Fitness to Drive Assessment
For current licence holders whose health may be affecting their driving.
Who this is for
This assessment is for experienced drivers with a medical condition, injury, or disability that may be affecting their driving. This includes older drivers where there are concerns about changes in physical function, vision, memory, or thinking.
The purpose is to determine whether your condition is affecting your driving, and if so, whether anything can be put in place to keep you driving safely.
What is involved
The assessment has two parts, completed on the same day.
The off-road session takes place at your home. We discuss your medical history, medications, and driving history, then screen your vision, physical function, and thinking skills such as attention, reaction time, and problem solving.
The on-road session takes place in a dual-controlled vehicle with an accredited driving instructor. You drive around your local area in a range of conditions, from quiet streets to busier roads and intersections.
Together the two parts take around two to three hours. You are welcome to have a family member present for the off-road session, though they cannot join the drive.
We discuss the outcome with you straight after the drive. A comprehensive report is written following the assessment, with a copy provided to you, your doctor, the licensing body, and any other relevant parties.

Frequently Asked Questions
Whose car do I use?
Ours. The drive is done in a car with a second set of pedals so the Driving Instructor can step in if needed. This applies to everyone, and is not a reflection on your driving.
Can I keep driving until my assessment?
It depends. If the licencing body or your doctor has advised you not to drive, you need to follow that advice. If not, and you have a valid unrestricted licence, you may be able to continue driving up until the assessment.
Will I automatically lose my licence?
No. It is an independent and fair assessment to ensure the well-being and the safety of everyone on the road. Most people we assess keep driving.
