By submitting a referral or proceeding with an assessment through Steer, you acknowledge and agree to the following:

1. Off-Road Assessment

You consent to completing an off-road assessment conducted by a Steer Occupational Therapist. This assessment may include:

  • Discussion of your medical history and driving experience

  • Screening of vision, physical ability, cognition, and decision-making

  • Assessment of road-rule knowledge relevant to safe driving

Information obtained during this assessment helps determine whether an on-road assessment is appropriate.

2. On-Road Assessment

You understand that an on-road assessment:

  • Requires you to hold a valid driver’s licence and medical clearance (if applicable)

  • Involves driving with a Steer Occupational Therapist seated in the rear of the vehicle and a Specialist Driving Instructor seated in the front passenger seat with access to dual controls

  • Includes driving in familiar and unfamiliar areas, following directions, and a feedback discussion during and after the drive

You agree to implement feedback where requested.

3. Use of Video / Photography

Steer may capture video or photographs during your assessment for clinical purposes only, including providing feedback about your driving.
Separate written consent will be sought if any media is ever requested for marketing or educational use. No promotional use will occur without your explicit permission.

4. Possible Outcomes

You acknowledge that Steer assessments may result in one of the following outcomes:

Safe to continue driving
You are considered medically and functionally safe to continue driving.

Further Assessment / Rehabilitation
Further lessons, rehabilitation sessions, or vehicle-modification training may be required before a final determination can be made.

No longer safe to drive
You are not considered safe to drive, and a recommendation will be made that your licence be suspended or cancelled.

Assessment outcomes are based on Steer’s clinical judgement, relevant standards, and evidence observed during the assessment. Outcomes are not negotiable.

5. Behaviour and Safety

Aggressive, abusive, or threatening behaviour will not be tolerated. Steer may immediately cease an assessment if such behaviour occurs. Fees paid are non-refundable in this circumstance. You may seek a second opinion at your own expense.

6. Reporting and Disclosure

You consent to Steer preparing a report outlining the assessment findings. This report may be shared with:

  • The relevant state or territory driver licensing authority

  • Your referring doctor, case manager, or medical specialist

  • Your nominated driving school (if applicable)

  • Any party legally involved in the licensing or referral process

Steer cannot withhold information that may affect road safety or licensing decisions.

7. Privacy Policy

There is no privacy policy section covering the collection and storage of personal data under the Australian Privacy Act 1988. Given you'll be collecting health information (which is sensitive information under the Act), you are likely required to have an APP-compliant privacy policy addressing how you collect, store, use and disclose personal information, and how individuals can access or correct their records.
